About 4K for Cancer
What is the 4K for Cancer?
The 4K for Cancer is a group of teams that work through the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults, located in Baltimore, MD. For summer 2014, the 4K for Cancer has four cross-country bike teams and one cross-country run team. The size of the team varies, but my running team has 27 members. All participants in the 4K for Cancer are college or graduate students. Each team member must fundraise a minimum of $4,500 for the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults in order to participate in the summer trip.
Each day of our run, each runner dedicates the day to someone who has been affected by cancer. The names of these individuals will be written on the backs of our calves in Sharpie to serve as reminders to all of our teammates why we are doing what we're doing. Along our cross-country route, we will also have service opportunities. We will stop by local hospitals to deliver chemo care bags to young adults going through chemotherapy, and we will even surprise a couple college-aged young adults who have been affected by cancer with a college scholarship.
How does the run work?
We have 4 vans that come with us. The run is done relay-style, and every person is assigned a new running buddy each day so that we will get the chance to run with every teammate. Each member of the team will run 12-16 miles per day (which can be broken up into shorter distances). If a teammate is not running, they're in the van waiting for their next turn to run. The vans will travel around the team, picking up and dropping off runners along the way. They follow us to make sure we stay safe and hydrated!
Where do you stay?
Every night, we secure a host site to house our team in the city we have run to where we can all sleep together in our sleeping bags we bring with us. These hosts can be anything from churches, YMCAs, gyms, schools, colleges, even the homes of community members. These hosts volunteer out of the kindness of their hearts to host our 27-member team at no cost. We wouldn't be able to do the 4K without them!
How do you eat?
All of our meals are donated! The goal of 4K is to spend as little money as possible in order to be able to donate more to the young adults who are battling cancer. We do not spend money on our food, so we rely on the generous donations and contributions from our hosts and local area restaurants or grocery stores to fuel us.
Where does the money go?
84% of the money we fundraise goes towards programmatic support for young adults with cancer! I encourage you to check out this website on the 4K for Cancer's main page to learn more about the breakdown of funds and how the money is used.
