Hello friends, family & followers!
I have created this tumblr as a way to forever keep my blog posts about my summer adventure. The website that I have (runwithrooney4k.com) will only remain active for about a year’s time, after which I will no longer continue using it. So, I wanted to create a blog that will be around forever, which is what this tumblr page will be! I have copied over my old blog posts from my website so you can catch up on those, and from now on, all of my posts will come from this page. So, be sure to bookmark this page if you’re interested in following my adventure this summer.
I realize it has been FAR too long since I’ve written anything about the 4K and so much has happened since my last post in January about the directors retreat. I’ll try and give you updates as best I can about my progress with different parts of 4K:
Fundraising
I have been rocking and rolling with fundraising! As of today, I am 88% (or $3,972) of the way to my overall goal of $4,500. I have been so amazed at the generosity of my friends, family and even people who barely know me or just heard about me through someone else. It is thanks to all of my donors that I will be able to participate in this summer’s run. But, more importantly, it is thanks to these donors that so many young adults across the country with cancer are getting the support they need as they fight for their lives.
I have just under one month left to reach my $4,500 goal. If you haven’t had the chance to donate yet, I certainly encourage you to do so. You can donate online with a credit card very easily (and safely), plus it’s tax deductible! Click here to check out my online donor page and click on “Give Now” to contribute.
Running
Of course, this summer wouldn’t be able to happen physically unless I was training for it! I have been running 4-5 days per week, biking 1 day a week and on occasion I’ll add in some hot yoga for good measure.
Just last weekend on April 13, I ran the Rock n Roll half marathon in Raleigh, NC. It was a very hilly 13.1 miles, but I had so much fun listening to bands along the course and making friends with complete strangers who I ran next to!
I took last week a little easy to reward myself for finishing the half marathon, but this week I’m back at it again! Today is Marathon Monday, which is practically a holiday in the running world; it’s the day of the Boston Marathon! After last year’s tragic incident, watching the athletes compete today was inspiring, moving and heartwarming. In honor of Marathon Monday, I’ll be going on a nice 7 mile run this afternoon in the sunshine of South Carolina!
It also helps that we got our first round of awesome 4K gear in the mail about a month ago! I got my duffle for the summer which all of my belongings must fit into, some shorts, a couple t-shirts, a jersey, a hoodie, a GPS watch and (most exciting) a brand new pair of Sauconys. Needless to say, I’ve already broken in the new shoes quite well!
Leadership
As run director, I’ve definitely been staying busy working with our amazing leadership team. We have 5 leg leaders who are in charge of securing housing for every night of the trip for us who have been doing a great job so far. We have a PR coordinator who is encouraging our team to post on our fundraising page blogs. Our service coordinator is setting up several opportunities for our team to engage in service in many of the cities we pass through this summer. Finally, we have 2 trainers who will be a great help to us during the summer, leading us in stretches and helping us prevent injuries!
Currently, I’m preparing to Skype each of our leadership team members to get to know them better over the next few weeks. I’m so excited to chat with all of them one-on-one and learn more about them. They’ll be such important parts of our team this summer, and I am so thankful for all the work they have put in so far!
My co-director Alex and I have also been working on some “virtual team bonding” ideas for our team to get to know each other better before we finally meet up in San Francisco in mid-June. I don’t want to give too much away in case my teammates are reading, but it’s gonna be pretty awesome!

Those are about all the updates I’ve got for now. My parents officially booked our flight to San Francisco last week; I will be arriving on June 12 to do a little sight-seeing with my parents before we get the whole team together! Now that the flight is booked, things are SO MUCH MORE REAL! This is actually happening…and soon! I am incredibly excited to finally get there and get this summer started. Although I guess I should book my plane ticket home for when I arrive in Baltimore…but I’ll get to that eventually. Thanks for reading along, friend! Hope you keep up with me as we get closer to the big event!
xoxo,
Natalie
