I was sitting at Flying Saucer with my dear friend Carly on Wednesday, November 20, just catching up with her when I got the email. Immediately, I started screaming and making a scene in the middle of the restaurant. Our waitress stared at me for a moment, then came up and asked, “Did you just beat a level on Candy Crush or something?”
No, I’m not even joking. She really asked that.
After applying online to the 4k for Cancer about a week prior to that, I had a phone interview on Friday, November 15. I felt like the interview had gone so well, and I was told that I would hear within the next week if I earned a spot on the team or not. The acceptance email could not have come any sooner!!!
There are so many thoughts, feelings and words I have about my upcoming journey, which is a big reaosn why I started this blog. Throughout the next few months, as I train for the run and raise money for the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults, this blog will be where I’m able to debrief and reflect what this whole experience really means to me.
It’s about more than the miles I cover in my shoes, and it’s about more than the dollars I raise. It’s about the stories.
I have my own stories of my experience with how cancer has affected my loved ones. So many people have similar stories, and these are worth sharing. As I run across the country, I will hear countless stories from my teammates, from our housing hosts each night and from the young adults with cancer we get to meet along our journey. To me, storytelling is important. It’s therapeutic, it’s brave and everyone learns something from it. I’m signing off for now, but thank you for taking a look at my site. I hope that you will follow me on my journey!
