Day 10: Hurricane, UT, to Beaver, UT (Tuesday, June 24)
Distance traveled: 88 miles
Personal running distance today: 8 miles
Total personal miles to-date: 79 miles
Today's dedications: Theresa Moss and Randy Kelly
My running buddy: Alex (my co-run director)
Weather: Beautiful, sunny, 70s/80s
Alright, so I must be honest: we intended on going to Beaver, UT, today. However, we are actually in Cedar City. Why you ask? Well, it turned out that the campground could no longer host us in Beaver, so we had to quickly figure out a new plan. With the great work of some of my teammates, we secured a hotel in Cedar City (halfway between Hurricane and Beaver) that opened up their big breakfast/lounge area for us to stay in. They also provided us one actual hotel room free, so we all get nice warm, clean showers tonight!
Anyways, back to the start. We got to sleep in until 5 a.m. today in Hurricane, which was SO exciting for everyone! We woke up, packed up our stuff from the Hurricane Community Center, then headed out straight from our host. We had intended on running all our miles along Utah-9, but as it turned out, that highway went straight through Zion National Park, and unless we wanted to pay $25 per van, we needed to find another route.
Since the distance between the two cities was short and we each only had to do 8 miles, it was easy to find an alternative way to get our miles done. We had all finished our 8 miles by about 11:00 a.m., which is probably a new record for our team. The best part is that it wasn't scorching hot and we weren't in the desert! Instead, it was a beautiful day with a breeze and not too much heat. Plus, those mountain views really can't be beat.

Since all of our vans went out together today rather than splitting into teams, I got the chance to run with my co-run director Alex. We were having a great time, however, our legs were not quite agreeing with it, seeing as we were in pain almost the whole time. But no worries, we powered through it and finished strong.
Afterward, we headed halfway to Cedar City, UT. We killed some time while we figured out our host situation for this evening, so the team took over the Starbucks in town. I took advantage of our free time and went with a few girls to get a much-needed load of laundry done, so now I have clean clothes! It's the little things that make all the difference on 4K, like having freshly-washed laundry.
Once we had figured out our new host, we all went to dinner together at Centro Woodfired Pizza. It was delicious, and I even tried a local Utah beer there, too. Now we're all at the hotel just hanging out for the night. People are rotating through the showers while I'm catching up on a few things I've neglected over the past few days. It's strange how much not having internet can affect your days! But sometimes it's peaceful, too. We also got snow cones donated to the whole team, so I'm currently enjoying a delicious cherry one.
Tonight I'm hoping to get to bed early because I'm pretty drained (as per usual). Our route for tomorrow is already set; we are going to drive about 30-45 minutes to get to Beaver (where we were supposed to start tomorrow morning) and then run to Gunnison, UT. It's about 99 miles between the cities, so each of us will be conquering just 9 miles each.
The good news is that the weather should be equally as lovely as it was today, if not more so. The even better news is that when we arrive in Gunnison tomorrow afternoon, we have Thursday OFF as a rest day and can enjoy it! We'll be doing our first hospital visit to hang out with a few young adults going through chemotherapy that day, and I couldn't be more excited. Also...the USA/Germany World Cup game is on, so I'm stoked we get to catch yet another game. I BELIEVE THAT WE WILL WIN!
Run happy,
Natalie
